Question:

How easy is it to work while using this - at a stand up desk?j

Answers:

  • In many ways this is an ideal piece of exercise equipment for a standing desk as you can pause if something on the screen holds your attention and then continue stepping when you are ready to go again.  It's also possible to keep the upper body fairly level  and static as the motion is mostly side to side rather than up and down and as it's a smooth predictable motion you can type quite freely. For myself and a few of my colleagues we have found most of the stepping is done when you are reading which, in computer work, is often about half the time and then when you type you tend to pause. It's something of a personal thing though, as for others they continue stepping regardless of whether it's typing or reading.

The other thing I would say is stepping is more physical than walking ( I think it's about MET 5 in the activity scale with walking around MET 2   ( mets being relative to sedentary / sitting which is MET 1 )  so it's probably something you would do for no more than 30 minutes to an hour at a time followed by a break of similar length before continuing. The ideal combination we advise is to break the morning/ afternoon into sit, stand, step chunks so that there is full range of movement and no one activity becomes overly burdensome.

Question:

Could you tell me - does this make a lot of noise? I am interested in purchasing one but share an office and would not want to be a distraction to others. Thanks

Answers:

  • The stepper is not noise-free ( a small amount of air squishing noises as you go up and down ) but I would not say intrusive. We would probably put it on a par with the hum of an air conditioner although not quite as constant as you would obviously be going up and down. Having said that I don't think we have ever had one back for being too noisy.   Ultimately, it may depend on your colleagues. If they are an easy going bunch it should be fine but if you have one or two that take issue easily then it may be best to give it a miss

Question:

Can this stepper be used when sitting down? I have an office job and sit down for 9 hours a day - I hate that I have to sit still for that long and am looking for a way to move my legs under the desk. Thanks

Answers:

  • Unfortunately, the twist stepper is intended for standing due to the downward pressure you would need to apply ( essentially using your body weight ).  For under the desk leg exercise you are better off with an under the desk pedal exerciser. Failing that I would suggest getting up from your desk every 40-50 mins and doing about a minute of lunges, squats or if work allows intensive stepping. The act of moving for periods of little but often is really what you need to counter the effects of metabolic syndorme

Question:

Can it help to get slim legs?

Answers:

  • Tricky one to answer because the stepper develops muscle tone which in itself is an aid to fat burning ( I believe muscle burns calories at 2.5x the rate of fat) but you can't really slim down in a targeted area.  For example trying to spot lose fat on your abs by doing sit-ups would not really work for an individual if they carried lots of fat. Tthey would develop muscle in that area but unfortunately it just would not be seen until the subcutaenous fat is reduced to the point where muscle tone becomes apparent. The same goes for focussed leg exercises.   What can be said, though is that the legs and in particular the glutes carry the largest muscles in the body and so toning and building muscle in this area will go a long way to calorie burning fat reduction which in turn leads to slimmer looking legs

Question:

I hope you can help please. I recently purchased the office mini stepper but have lost the instructions for setting up and adjusting. At the moment I am using it but the steps will not reach down to the bottom of the step . Is there anyway you could email me the instructions please?

Answers:

  • The only adjustment that is needed is to screw in the black plastic knob at the front of the stepper which raises the step height. Alternately, unscrewing it lowers the height which would mean the step height touches the rear stopper when it is pressed down
Hopefully, that could be the issue
